TABARDS ORDERING PROCESS - DESIGN DETAILS

TEAM TABARDS - DESIGNS AND PATTERNS

In the first article of the series, we explained the process of ordering team tabards. You can find general information and a description of the process HERE.

In this post, you will learn:

  • What standard fabrics and colors you can choose from.
  • Whether it’s possible to choose a color outside our palette.
  • What our basic patterns are.
  • If other patterns are possible.
  • What fastening options are available for tabards.
  • The most popular decoration methods for tabards.

What standard fabrics and colors do we offer?

We typically use three types of fabric: cotton, wool, and linen. Each has different properties, advantages, and drawbacks.

Cotton: A widely used fabric. We use thick twill cotton, which provides great durability. It’s also the most affordable option, so tabards made from this fabric come at no extra charge to the base price. Its colors are vibrant, with a rich palette. However, it’s not the best choice for hardcore historical reenactors. It’s perfect for athletes and those less focused on the historical accuracy of details like the fabric used.

COTTON FABRIC FOR TEAM TABARDS

Wool: The most noble of the standard options. It’s dense, heavy, and much more durable than cotton or linen, making it the sturdiest choice. Wool colors are deeply saturated. The durability of wool tabards comes with a trade-off: weight, as they’re about 30% heavier than other options. A wool tabard with lining is also relatively stiff, especially at first. We recommend it to those who prefer long-lasting tabards, reenactors, and clients who value appearance over sports performance.

WOOL FABRIC FOR TEAM TABARDS

Linen: The lightest of the three. Linen is the most breathable option with an open weave. Its colors are slightly muted compared to cotton or wool. Since we use pure linen—a very historical choice—it tends to wrinkle easily. Linen tabards are lightweight and airy but also the most delicate, due to the fabric’s weave. It’s a great choice for participants in long battles or duelists with short combat durations.

Can I choose a color outside the palette?

Yes! If you don’t find the right fabric in our standard palette, we can often source a suitable color from another supplier. For large enough orders, we can even have a custom color produced for you.

We can also work with metallic satin, silk, or printed fabrics—these are priced individually.

What are our basic patterns?

We use two patters - one with armscyes (Pattern 1) and second one simplier, based on a rectangular shape (Pattern 2).

MEDIEVAL TABARD PATTERN

Pattern 1 - our favorite and most universal pattern features armscyes and a slight flare from the armpit downwards. We recommend this as the default choice for most clients. The extra fabric is usually gathered at the waist with a belt.

Pattern 2 - sport-series tabards are designed for those with very large shoulder armor. This cut lacks armscyes, allowing us to tailor sleeve openings to your shoulder armor. However, without armscyes, the tabard fits less snugly under the arms. They’re ideal for teams needing spare universal tabards or individuals using oversized shoulder armor.

We also offer simple “overlays” ("Open" tabards) which are versatile and easy to size. They are not closed on the side, unlike other tabards. Despite their simplicity, they can be customized with the same decorative options as any other tabard while remaining size-friendly.

You can also choose the sleeve shape and length. Generally, for duels, sleeveless tabards with armscyes work well. For buhurt, sleeves are almost essential, and at least short sleeves are recommended.

Are other shapes and patterns possible?

Yes! Just like custom fabric options, we can work with custom patterns.

What fastening options are available for tabards?

  • Buttons: Choose between 5, 10, or even 15 buttons, available in fabric or metal.
  • Ties: We can add hidden ties for free or visible decorative lacing —perfect for adding color!
  • Pullover tabards: Sometimes, the only solution to accommodate complex front decorations.
  • Side-tied tabards: If you want to avoid front fastenings but still need an easy-to-wear design.
